The W:O:A Metal Battle started in 2004 as a newcomer competition for hard rock and heavy metal bands. In 2010 it was held in all 16 federal states of Germany and another 25 countries worldwide. In a multilevel selection process the best contestants come together in each German federal state and all participating countries to find the best national newcomer from each country, where a judging panel of music experts and professionals crowns the best live band. The winners of the national competitions then receive a chance to play live in front of a huge audience during the Wacken Open Air on the W.E.T. Stage (Wacken Evolution Tent). The newcomer band with the best live performance of all contestants will be named winner of the yearly Metal Battle and receives a contract with the in-house label Wacken Records.
